Denver is far too big to fit in one entry. Instead, we will give you a “taste” here and there, as opportunity arises.
Labor Day weekend, the annual “Taste of Colorado” filled the park at the Civic Center in the heart of downtown. Throngs of people stood elbow-to-turkey-drumstick, to sample food from Denver’s many restaurants. In true carnival fashion, a booth at the gate sold tickets that patrons exchanged for various food offerings. Bands banged out tunes that could barely be heard above the collective voice of the crowd, smoke filled the air and the weather co-operated with a sunny respite from the recent rains.
Across the street, the Denver Art Museum hosted its monthly free day. Held the first Saturday of every month, “DAM”, as it is called, opens the doors to their two building-six-floor wonderland. Plan several days or one long, leisurely one, for this vast expanse of every type of art imaginable.
Adjoining the Civic Center park, is the Denver Library main branch. Seven floors and seeming to have Acres and acres of books, the library is definitely worth the trip! There is a whole room devoted to children’s books, another for just books on tape/CD and paperbacks. Book-lovers should plan on spending the day! There is a small coffee-shop and snack bar on the ground floor. Don’t count on great food, but it will sustain you for more book-browsing.
So there you have it–a mere few blocks, just the tiniest portion of Denver, but packed with opportunity for days of fun! Travel on!
